About Bankruptcy Help Map

Bankruptcy Help Map is a free, plain-English guide for people in the United States who are thinking about filing Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy: what property each state lets you keep (exemptions), whether your income passes the first step of the means test, which federal bankruptcy court you file in, and where to find free legal help. Free tools check the first step of the means test and write a notice letter and a checklist in your browser.

We are not a law firm, not a court and not a government agency. We don't represent anyone, we don't prepare bankruptcy petitions, and we never contact courts, trustees or creditors for you. We don't tell anyone which chapter to choose. We link to official sources: state law, the federal bankruptcy courts, the U.S. Trustee Program, the U.S. Code and the official bankruptcy forms.
